Sishugram Children’s Village was established way back in 1975, under the aegis of the Assam State Flood Relief Committee, to house children orphaned or made destitute by floods. It was registered as a public charitable trust (Regn. No.1075/1975), whose founding Chairman was the then Chief Minister Sarat Chandra Sinha. It moved to its present permanent location in North Guwahati in 1982 on land allotted by the government. It became a Home only for girls from 1997, Smti. Renuka Devi Barkataki was the Chairman of the Trust for a very long period till her demise in 2017.
Presently Sishugram is a recognized Child Care Institute (CCI) (only one of two such institutions in the Kamrup district) (registered under the Niti Aayog Darpan Id: AS/2025/0720335) as a Home only for orphaned or destitute girls between the ages of 6 and 18 years. In the last years, we have served as both temporary and permanent shelter for girls in distress being brought to us by Childline, by the Police or by the DCPO. The day to day management is taken care of by the Sishugram Local Managing Committee (SLMC) under the guidance of theTrust Board led by of Padmashri Ajoay Dutta.
Today the Home houses more than 15 girls who attend the local government school and are taken care of by two attendants, two House Mothers, a case worker and a full time residential Superintendent who all live together as a family, supported by various part-time counsellors, tutors and other personnel.
