A newly constructed multipurpose Hall for use by the residents of the destitute girls home named Sishugram was inaugurated by the District Commissioner, Kamrup, Smti Keerthi Jalli in North Guwahati on 1 November 2023, in the presence of Padmashri Ajoy Dutta, Chairman of the Sishugram Trust Board, other Trustees including Mr. R.S. Joshi, Professor Rabin Goswami and Mr. Ruben Chowdhury, members of the Local Managing Committee and several dignitaries and well-wishers from the city as well as from North Guwahati. Present were Professor Sachin Kakoty from IIT Guwahati, Smti Sewali Chowdhury, former Regional Director, RBI, Mr. Jogen Borpujari, former ED, Gauhati Refinery, Prof. Anuradha Dutta, retired professor of Gauhati University, Smti Bandana Barua and Smti Nijara Das of the ICCW, Prof. Rakhee Kalita Moral from Cotton University, Mr. Tilak Das, Vice Chairman, North Guwahati Municipal Board, Mr. P.J. Chetia, Project Manager, IOCL Bottling Plant, Fr. Tony Marshall, Principal, St. Anthony’s HS School, Smti Charu Kalita, Principal Auniati Kamaldev HS School, among others. Several teachers from North Guwahati College as well as donors for the construction of the Hall were also present.
Welcoming the august gathering, Padmashri Ajoy Dutta spoke of the reasons for setting up the Sishugram Trust, way back in 1975, by the then Chief Minister, Shri. Sarat Ch. Sinha. Dr. K. Srinivasan then gave a brief overview of the staff and girls currently residing in Sishugram. The Sishugram girls sang two songs and also presented those present with hand-made cards as mementoes. The Managing Trustee Dr. Meenaxi Barkotoki, spoke of the details of the construction as well as about the plans to develop Sishugram and requested the DC to kindly ensure that the entire land belonging to Sishugram can be used as per Masterplan prepared for projects to house senior citizens as well as a working girls hostel, besides the existing Girls Home. In her inaugural speech, the District Commissioner appreciated the efforts already made by the current office bearers and assured all assistance and cooperation for the future development of Sishugram. She assured all steps would be taken from her side to settle the land issues at an early date. Mention was made with thanks of the members of the construction committee headed by the Founding Director of IIT Guwahati, Prof. D.N. Buragohain. Architect Mr. Ranjan Kalita and the contractor, Mr. Bishwajit Bharati were also felicitated at the very well-attended meeting, which was moderated by Trustee Partha Pratim Barkakati.
