Ever since its establishment right next to Sishugram in 1995, the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, has been supporting and helping Sishugram with many immediate as well as long term needs. In the initial years, the Ladies Club of IIT Guwahatil led by Mrs. Nupur Buragohain, wife of the Founding Director of IIT Guwahati Prof. D.N. Buragohain, looked after the day to day management of Sishugram while many student volunteers came to help the girls with their studies, sports and other activities.
Although there have been MoUs between the two organisations since 2016, over the years, this very strong link has weakened. But IIT Guwahati still provides water, milk, emergency medical support, electrical repairs, and other such help, besides allowing our girls to access training programmes and participate in extracurricular activities there. Some IIT faculty still take an active interest in our girls and sponsor their further education after they leave Sishugram. The current MoU came into effect in 17th Feb 2023 for a further period of 5 years. We are really optimistic that relations between IIT Guwahati and Sishugram will improve in the very near future under the leadership and active intervention of the present Director, Prof. D. Jalihal.
The text of the MoU can be found here.
The last surviving Founding Trustee of Sishugram, Renuka Devi Barkataki, also took over charge of the Red Cross Society in Assam in the 1980s. Thereafter, she took the help of the Red Cross staff to manage Sishugram. When the Red Cross Society started a Children’s Home in Lankeswar, all the boys from Sishugram were moved to the Children’s Home in 1997 and Sishugram became a Home for Girls only. Since then till early 2022, when the Trust Board was reconstituted, the day to day management of Sishugram was handled by the Red Cross Society, Assam.
